My design thoughts: For Christmas this year I decided to compile a cookbook of family recipes from my mom, grandma, mother-in-law, sisters, etc. I wanted to create retro/vintage look so I found a stock photo of this "vintage housewife" that I thought was funny. The problem with the picture however, was that they background was a very busy multi-colored chevron pattern variation. I didn't think I'd be able to put much text over the background because it'd get lost in the business of the background. Thus I removed the background, added a gradient teal colored background to create movement and inserted a calligraphy brush font.
Tools used:
Quick select
gradient tool
color picker
vibrant adjustment layer
Color choice: Choosing a color for the background was very difficult because the main colors on the girl are purple and green - contrasting colors. I tried yellow, black, white, green and every variation I could think of. In the end I went with a split complement color of teal and it worked the best in my opinion.
Font choice: I wanted to create a very girly, homemade looking font so I went with this calligraphy/brush font that I think adds a nice feminine organic look.
